MAPP gas is composed of various hydrocarbons, mainly methyl acetylene, propadiene, and propane. It is usually colorless in both its liquid and gaseous forms, although when its concentration is higher than 100 ppm, it can have a pungent odour similar to acetylene or fish. This is a result of covered amines added as polymerization inhibitors.

It produces a relatively hot flame, with a temperature of 2,976°C, and a high heat energy of 15,445 kJ/m3 from the inner cone. Although this is lower than the heat energy released by acetylene (18,890 kJ/m3), it is significantly higher than propane (10,433 kJ/m3). It also has a much bigger air intake than acetylene, leading to less distortion when cutting metals. Furthermore, the secondary flame, located at the outer cone, also emits a high level of heat.
